If the robot docks from directly in front but fails after a normal cleaning run, focus on station placement, navigation, LDS and wheel traction. If it reaches the base and repeatedly backs out, start with contacts, spring pins and the final approach.
Four docking failures that look similar but are not
It circles or searches without reaching the base
This is usually a return-to-base problem. Check whether the station is powered, whether the robot started from the current base location, and whether the approach area is open.
It reaches the ramp, backs in, then drives out again
That points more directly to final alignment, dirty contact surfaces, a charging pin that is not returning properly, or poor wheel/ramp traction.
It docks from 1–2 m away but not after a full cleaning
The base and final docking movement can work. Focus on map context, LDS operation, interference around the station and whether the base was recently moved.
It docks but charging still never starts

Narrow down the docking failure
Does the robot reach the dock area on its own?
Watch a normal return-to-base attempt. “Near the dock” means it can clearly locate the station and begins the final approach.
Eight X40 Ultra docking checks to try in order
Confirm the base is powered
A loose plug or unpowered station can prevent a normal return and charge sequence. Firmly seat the cord and make sure the base is on before diagnosing navigation.
Run the 1–2 metre return test
Put the robot directly in front of the base and press the recharge control. This quickly tells you whether the X40 can identify and engage the station from close range.
Give the dock a clean approach lane
Dreame recommends placing the station against a wall, leaving about 5 cm on each side and keeping roughly 1.5 m in front free of obstacles. Keep the ramp flat and fully seated.
Reduce interference and reflections near the station
Dreame specifically warns about strong nearby signal sources such as routers or TVs and mirror-like reflections opposite the dock. If the short test works but long returns fail, this is worth checking.
Clean contacts, sensor windows and spring pins
Use a clean dry cloth. Gently press the charging pins and confirm they return freely. Avoid spraying cleaner directly onto the robot or powered base.
Check LDS rotation and drive-wheel traction
Dreame’s return-to-charge guidance asks you to verify that the top LDS laser is rotating normally and that the drive wheels are not slipping, stuck or trapped.
If you moved the base, restart from the base
Place the robot on the station and start the next cleaning from there. Do not keep moving the dock between tests; changing the reference point can make troubleshooting harder.
Restart first; reset only after the physical checks
Restart the X40 Ultra and test again. Dreame lists factory reset after restart for persistent docking faults, but a reset clears saved maps and settings, so treat it as the last software check.

Do not replace the battery just because the robot will not dock
A docking fault and a charging fault overlap, but they are not the same diagnosis. If the robot cannot complete the approach, solve that behavior first. If it docks correctly but the battery percentage does not rise, switch to the charging guide instead of opening the robot.
